PGKA - Coach´s Corner - Heads up puck protection

This is a beginners drill working on heads up stickhandling and puck protection. Form three groups of players. Two groups in the circles and one group among the pylons. On the whistle, the players in the circles must skate with their puck keeping the puck inside the circle.

The players skating around the pylons skate random patterns keeping their heads up. Every ten seconds the coach whistles for the players to rotate.

The keypoints are:

  • Heads up skating with the puck.

  • On the whistle, the players that were skating around the pylons go in for a shot on net while the other players rotate out of the circles into the next position.

Variation:

  • Allow the players to poke-check each others puck, players need to protect their puck while skating and keeping heads up
